Partnership Stichting OPEN en Team CORE

Stichting OPEN en Team CORE, een studententeam van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), gaan een partnership aan en starten een pilot om metalen uit e-waste te recyclen.

Team CORE heeft een technologie ontwikkeld die het mogelijk maakt om de metalen uit afgedankte elektrische en elektronische apparaten (e-waste) weer terug te brengen naar pure elementen. Dit idee sluit naadloos aan op de ambitie van Stichting Organisatie Producentenverantwoordelijkheid E-waste Nederland (OPEN) om de e-wastesector circulair te maken.Team CORE en Stichting OPEN streven ernaar in het najaar van 2020 een pilot te starten, die een proef en een haalbaarheidsstudie zal omvatten.

Wij gaan eigenlijk op een hele simpele manier metalen recyclen, vertelt Dirk van Meer, teamcaptain van Team CORE. “Namelijk zoals de aarde dat zelf ook doet, maar dan sneller, want de aarde doet er zelf drie miljoen jaar over. CORE wil in 2024 een fabriek operationeel hebben die vijftigduizend ton afval per jaar kan verwerken. Nu is het nog een computermodel, maar eind juli hopen we een proof of concept te hebben. Een reactor waarin e-waste wordt verwerkt.” De naam CORE verwijst naar de kern van de aarde waar een soortgelijk proces plaatsvindt onder hoge temperatuur en hoge druk.

Het is prachtig om te zien dat ook op het gebied van e-waste innovatieve circulaire initiatieven vorm krijgen, aldus Jan Vlak, projectdirecteur van Stichting OPEN. “OPEN streeft ernaar om de huidige e-wastemarkt te herstructureren en te stroomlijnen en in verregaande partnerships samen de inzameling en recycling van e-waste naar een nog hoger plan te tillen. Een partnership tussen Team CORE en Stichting OPEN past mooi bij die ambitie.”

Over Stichting OPEN

StichtingOrganisatie Producentenverantwoordelijkheid E-waste Nederland (OPEN) is in december 2019 opgericht door 2.000 producenten van onder meer witgoed, ICT, audio- en visuele apparatuur, gereedschappen, armaturen en zonnepanelen. Together with IVER we are setting up a factory in the north of the Netherlands in Delfzijl and are currently investigating the options to build a second and third one in Duiven and Haps.

What does the job imply?

As member you are part of the executive part of the student team. You are specifically responsible for the pyrolysis and melting part of the technology. Elementary retraction is divided into two core technologies, of which the first is pyrolysis and the second melting. As responsible member you perform experiments with current installations on and off campus. You are also involved in the build of a proof of concept for our battery pyrolysis installation or with the current test oven and be heavily involved in the design and building of the ovens on the actual locations.

Elementary retraction is divided into two core technologies, of which the first is pyrolysis and the second melting. As responsible board member you oversee experiments with current installations on and off campus. You are also involved in the build of a proof of concept for our battery pyrolysis installation and be heavily involved in the design and building of the ovens on the actual locations.

Current Projects

Project YELLOWSTONE

Within project Yellowstone the technology of pyrolysis and melting, combined in elementary retraction, is investigated and implemented within North Brabant. The main partners in this project are BOM, Brainport Development, MRE Stimuleringsfonds, TU/e and CORE. The targeted waste streams consist out of sludge, batteries, pyrolysis waste and many more waste streams.

Project PFAS

Within project PFAS an alternative technology for remediation of polluted soil. The technology used is developed within the ‘extra-innovation time’ of two students (Niels Bongers and Dirk van Meer) within CORE. The technology has been further developed by order of Schiphol and is now currently in transition towards its first POC installation on site.

Project IVER BV

Within project IVER BV the technology of melting, is implemented in the north of the Netherlands (Delfzijl). In the old Ensartech installation our technology will be installed and operated in order to recycle pyrolysis waste, car materials and polluted soil. The main partners in this project are NOM, TONNON BV, AMBIENT, Eekels TBI and CORE.

Project ETNA

Within project Etna, the technology of melting, is implemented in Gelderland on the innofase terrain in Duiven. The goal of this project is to build an improved version of the IVER BV installation. The installation will be able to process 4 times as much waste per year as its northern sister (120.000 Tons per year).  The key partners in this project are ECO Architecten, Municipality Duiven, IVER, CORE and Waterboard Rijn & Ijssel. The targeted waste streams are polluted sludge, car waste and many more.

Project Proof of Concept Pyrolysis

This is a fully internal project, in which the art of pyrolysis is translated into the current age of green technology. As ideal technology for battery recycling and e-waste treatment the next generation pyrolysis installation is designed within the student team.

Project Proof of Concept Melting

This is another internal project, in which we are using our own oven to test the opportunities of elementary retraction. The installation will be delivered to the student team in June 2020 and will be fully operational. The key steps within this project is the development of the scrubbing installations and the performance of experiments.
