OVEN REVEAL EVENT

Who are we?

Team CORE is an official student team from the Eindhoven University of Technology, focusing on the improvement of a very powerful technology called “elementary retraction”, which enables the recycling of e-waste and many hard to process waste streams such as plastics and polluted soil.
This technology is inspired by the Earth itself. Our planet recycles waste that is transported via rivers and rain to the ocean where it sinks through the bottom into the CORE of the earth, where it falls apart back into its pure elements. The only downside, this takes nearly 3 million years to recycle, a bit longer than the time we have left to make an impact in this world. That is where we come in! By improving and miniaturizing this technology to an industrial scale, we are enabling the first circular generation.

Klaas van Egmond

If there is one person in the Netherlands that can tell us more about why we need to start recycling these waste streams, it is Klaas van Egmond. He studied at the Landbouwuniversiteit Wageningen, after which he started working at the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM). During his time here he was in charge of several studies, including those into air pollution and soil and groundwater. In 1989 he became the director of the Environment part of the RIVM, which later transformed into the Milieu- en Natuurplanbureau (MNP), which fused with the Ruimtelijk Planbureau in 2008 and transformed into the Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving. After which he was appointed as endowed professor environmentalism at the University Utrecht. Later he was appointed faculty teacher on the faculty of Geosciences at the same university. In 2009 he started as an advisor for the Triodos Bank on the field of sustainability and he even found time to cofound the Sustainable Finance Lab at the University of Utrecht. Without further ado… Klaas van Egmond!

Videos from Fans

We are not the only ones that think this technology and innovation is important. Throughout the years we have gathered a broad set of fans! Among these fans we can proudly mention, Prince Constantijn, Diederik Samsom, and the Commissioner of the King. Want to know who else joined the event? Watch it down below!

The Oven Reveal!

To reveal a special installation, you need a special guest. So we asked none-other-than Robert-Jan Smits, the President of the Executive Board of the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands since May 2019. In 2018-2019, he was a senior adviser for open access and innovation at the European Political Strategy Centre, and from 2010 to 2018, he served as director-general of research and innovation (RTD) at the European Commission. He is known for his key roles in planning Plan S, to ensure that all publicly funded scientific publications are available in Open Access by 2020, as well as for being one of the main architects of Horizon 2020. Enjoy our proud moment!

What does this oven actually do?

This oven shows that recycling e-waste and other hard to process waste streams into raw materials is indeed possible. We need this oven to check what kind of wall stones can survive the intense heat and corrosive environment to achieve recycling. Also, it is used to check the different waste streams distributed from different partners, including e-waste like circuit boards and batteries, but also plastic and contaminated soil.

Building factories

Of course, we are all in love with the new test oven! But this is not enough, to make an actual difference we need factories. It just so happens that we are building one together with IVER BV, one of our main partners at this very moment. We have been on RTL-Z with this already 8 times, but we can’t get enough from it and we think you can’t either!

But this is not the only factory we are focussing on. We are currently working on 3 big projects aside from IVER BV. Two of them, Tambora and Yellowstone, you can already find on our current projects page the other one is project Etna, which is located on the innofase terrain in Duiven. We will of course keep you updated on the progress of these projects via our socials and the website!

The future is green!

As mentioned before, within our process we use polluted and complex plastics as fuel for our oven. By heating it once, using gas, and feeding these ‘fuels’ that are currently dumped or burned without useful product, we create a more sustainable process. However, everyone that would state that we still produce CO2 has a valid point. To tackle this situation and create a fully circular world, we are working on carbon capture solutions. But so is the rest of the world, and at this moment there are still no, financially, suitable technologies on the market. We could therefore decide to wait and continue with the, already improved, technology of CORE. But that is not how we see the world, we want to be as sustainable as possible.

To accomplish this, we looked into possibilities to compensate for our CO2 emissions. After a long and thorough search, we came into contact with Trees4All, an amazing company that is planting trees all over the world! With them, we are going to plant trees in the areas where there is, now, a lot of child labor in mines and waste dumps. By planting trees and paying local farmers to maintain the new forests, we not only create a greener world, but also a fairer world. The children can go back to school, as their parents are being paid a fair price and the wasted country transforms back into beautiful forests.

To make this possible, we invited Simone Groenendijk (the Director of Trees4All) to sign a special contract, in which we commit ourselves to this mission. Find out more in the video below!

Follow us on our journey

We want to thank all our partners, relations, and fans that have followed us in the past years and have been supporting us from the start. And for everybody that joined us today, be welcome on our journey to the first circular generation! Together we are going to make this technology, this dream, a big success!
